Tanghal 11 in the Visayas
The Visayas cluster of islands has witnessed gripping
accounts of disaster in recent years but also through
this region's history— from natural disasters such a
typhoons and earthquakes, to social strife, mass
starvation, human trafficking and violence in many
levels. As a performative expression, theatre has often
been created and performed accompanying and
responding to these countless acts of schisms and
brokenness. The narratives often reveal its people's
deep y embedded spirit of resistance and resilience,
expressed in ways that are comic, even as they are
tragic.
Tanghal 11 in Visayas will explore this interesting
creative space between the Comic and the Tragic. The
festival will gather youth theater practitioners from
colleges, universities and community groups, together
with select theater luminaries in the Visayas, to share,
explore and learn from each other's experiences and
works. The host for 2017 will be Leyte Normal
University in Tacloban, Leyte and is scheduled from Nov.
10-12, 2017, a few days after the commemoration of
typhoon Yolanda on the 8th of November. The festival
will include performances (both in the proscenium but
also in community settings), sharing conferences and
trainings.
We announce this Call for Participation for Theater
Groups in the Visayas. The number of participants
from each group should not exceed ten. Length of
performances should be between 20-40 minutes.
