Our Mission for Sustainability

Leyte Normal University is a state university with teacher education as a flagship program. As an institution of learning anchored on the values of integrity, excellence and service, the university is committed to support and take a central role in achieving sustainable development by 2030. The call of action adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015 articulates the blueprint in achieving peace and prosperity now and for the future. The university situated in the Province of Leyte in the Philippines, have seen the impacts of climate change, poverty and gender inequality curtailing growth and development.

Experiencing the worst in typhoon Haiyan, the university stood firm to establish partnerships to ensure knowledge creation and dissemination in line with climate issues. The university also positioned itself to establish infrastructures with carbon offsetting mechanisms to assure a sustainable future. This is done along with the continued effort to educate the future leaders of this world. The university have produced climate advocates that champions climate action in various part of the world along with its partnerships with various organizations standing for the same cause.

Poverty incidence in the Province of Leyte at 20.8% (PSA, 2021) is at the median of the poverty scale (1 to 5). Despite this, the sheer volume of 20.8% which corresponds to 369,584 individuals in the pit of poverty remains a s a challenge in achieving a sustainable future (based on 2020 census population of 1,776,847).

The university mentored thousands of teachers regardless of gender, preferences, and race for its over 100 years of existence. Its stands in its dictum of esteemed professionalism which a teacher should always represent without curtailing the freedom of self-expressions.

The LNUs fourfold function of instruction, research, extension, and production are the opportunity of action in which the university leverage to achieve the SDGs. Through education, the minds are shaped and honed to produce individuals with respect and integrity.


Policies to Achieve Sustainability

No Poverty

The Leyte Normal University is committed to advancing sustainability to fight against poverty in all of its forms, including the environment, social responsibility, ethics, and economics. LNU shall practice responsible stewardship in its anti-poverty policies and procedures consistent with its vision, purpose, and strategic priorities, as well as the fiduciary and anti-poverty regulations that are applicable to the university and its scope.

Quality Education

The assurances of quality education is enshrined in the universities Quality Education Policy enabled by specific regulations on Lifelong Learning, Equal Student Opportunity, and Sustainable Learning Environment.

Gender Equality

Meaningful education at LNU means helping students develop educationally, socially, and emotionally with student-centered learning based on student needs, interests, and expectations regardless of gender. This is reinforced by policies on: LNU Gender and Development (GAD) Code, GAD Policies and Mandates, Policy of Nondiscrimination against women, Civil Service Commission (CSC) Agenda and Memo: LNU Gender and Development (GAD) Code, Non-discrimination policy for transgender.
